Have you ever thought about what lies beneath you while you sleep?  This might just give you the creeps when you think about. Not to worry though, there are still things you can do to get a good night’s sleep and avoid the wrath of the boogeyman.
Skin cells, body oils, and dust mites.
Yes, all these nasty little things are in your bed – right now. Â I know it’s not feasible to replace your mattress every year to get rid of the creepy crawlies, but there are steps you can take to minimize them and get the longest life possible out of your mattress.
First, make sure you vacuum your mattress regularly, from inner-spring pillow tops to memory foam beds, they all need a good once over with the vacuum to suck up anything laying on the surface. You should be vacuuming them at least once per month, more if you have the time or suffer from allergies. Â Everybody sluffs skin cells on their sheets, which get ground in down to the mattress fibers. Get those skin cells cleaned up as those skin cells attract the dust mites that feed on them. Although they are microscopic and not visible with the naked eye, they are living, breathing, eating, and yes even defecating (I know, disgusting right?) in your mattress. Â By vacuuming them monthly you can cut the number living beneath you in half.
Second, always use allergen-proof mattress covers.  They are tightly woven to help ensure that those creepy dust mites don’t come crawling out. Dust mites can exacerbate allergies and even asthma, so it’s important to take these extra steps if you suffer from them.  Mattress protectors are important to your stop spills and other liquids (i.e. sweat) from penetrating your mattress. Mattress protectors may also ensure the validity of your manufacturer’s warranty. Ask our sleep specialist for more details on that, too.
Lastly, stay clear of bedding that is hard, or expensive to clean. Â Once a week you should wash all of your bedding, and the hotter the water the better. Â The sheets at Midwest Mattress stand up to the hottest water, come in a variety of neutral colors, and remain silky smooth. Give them a try today!
